If you get a new remote or change the battery in your remote you may need to reprogram your vehicle to accept the keyless entry remote or key fob. This procedure works for a lot of 1998-2008 ford vehicles, see below for vehicles that the procedure works on and vehicles that use a slight variation on this procedure. I attempted to get this list accurate, I apologize because mistakes were probably made.
The procedure:
1. Turn ignition from OFF to RUN 8 times within 10 seconds, with the 8th time ending in
RUN. Door locks will cycle to confirm programming mode.
2. Within 20 seconds press any button on first keyless remote. Door locks will cycle
to confirm programming.
3. Within 20 seconds, press any button on second keyless remote. Door locks will
cycle again to confirm programming.
4. Turn ignition to OFF. Locks will again cycle to indicate end of programming mode.
This exact procedure should work for

Explorer 1998-2001
Escape 2001-2007
Escort 1997-2003

F150-F250 1997
F250-550 Super Duty 1999-2000
Ranger 1995-1997

Variation: Close doors first then open drivers door and press power unlock switch in door then continue procedure.

I have a 1999 F150 standard and I’ve tried 4,5, and 8 times and the locks don’t lock when I turn it to let me know its in programing mode. Any suggestions?
Are you sure the truck has keyless entry? I show that you should turn the ignition on 8 times.
Thank you for this information. I’m having trouble getting two remotes programmed. I have a 2006 f250. I can get one remote to work but the other one stops working. Do you have any advice? Thank you.
When you get your vehicle into program mode it forgets all other remotes. To program more than one remote you must program ALL remotes one right after the other in the same program mode session. After you get the vehicle to accept the first remote and the door locks or horn indicates the remote was accepted do it on the next remote within a few second, once done you can exit program mode.
Thank you so much. I got them both working.
